RIP William F. Buckley (1925-2008)

Posted by Thunder Pig on February 27, 2008

One of the icons of the conservative movement has died:

I’m devastated to report that our dear friend, mentor, leader, and founder William F. Buckley Jr., died overnight in his study in Stamford, Connecticut.

After year of illness, he died while at work; if he had been given a choice on how to depart this world, I suspect that would have been exactly it. At home, still devoted to the war of ideas.

As you might expect, we’ll have much more to say here and in NR in the coming days and weeks and months. For now: Thank you, Bill. God bless you, now with your dear Pat. Our deepest condolences to Christopher and the rest of the Buckley family. And our fervent prayer that we continue to do WFB’s life’s work justice.

I am saddened to hear about this. During my early years of being a conservative, I watched his show, Firing Line, on the local PBS station, and read National Review, when the internet came along, I read the magazine online. I also enjoyed many of his books, and looked forward to his columns in the magazine he founded.
I like to tell people that Jimmy Carter made me a Republican, William F. Buckley taught me conservatism, and Ronald Reagan showed showed me conservatism in action.

This man was a giant who helped keep this nation from slipping completely into socialism.

My prayers go out to his family, friends, and co-workers.

Here are sources of info about him, his life, and tributes to him. I will post them as I find them:
